The field of component-based software engineering (CBSE) is currently in a period of rapid growth and change. No longer is the field dominated by discussions of traditional kinds of source-code components, but the predominant view encompasses so-called "binary" components: components that adhere to industry standards and are shipped as "plug-ins" into an existing run-time architecture

Over the past couple of years, advances in the enterprise computing and client-server
communities have generated renewed interest in the concept of CBSE, bringing the terms
"component" and "component-based software development" into widespread use within the

In this paper, we describe our efforts to introduce CBSE into a university computer science
curriculum. We have developed a two-course sequence designed to teach principles of CBSE,
with an attempt to introduce sound fundamentals (as opposed to simply introducing commercial
tools and technologies) as an overarching goal. As a fundamental part of this course sequence,
we have developed a case study designed to support the introduction of these principles in an
incremental fashion. The conceptual framework given in Section 2 illustrates our view of the
relationships among various CBSE concepts; this framework provides the motivation for the

our initial case study and curriculum emphasis is on how to construct modular
software in a relatively straightforward architecture (standard C++ programming). This view of
components is much like the classical view found in [1, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Once this is complete, we
then look at issues relative to binary software components. Binary components are compiled
software artifacts which are typically integrated into the application at runtime; such
components represent the common, commercial use of the term “component.
